CranioSacral Therapy

Encouraging the body’s natural healing mechanisms to support overall health & wellbeing

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the CranioSacral system.

CST uses soft touch—typically no more than the weight of a nickel—to release restrictions in the CranioSacral system.

The CranioSacral system includes the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

This gentle approach encourages the body’s natural healing mechanisms and is based on the concept that improving the flow of cerebrospinal fluid can support overall health and well-being.

CST was developed by osteopathic physician Dr. John Upledger in the 1970s, based on the idea that subtle rhythmic motions of these tissues can be palpated and influenced by skilled hands.

How it works

During a typical session, the client lies fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner applies light pressure to various parts of the body, especially the skull, sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine), and spine.

Practitioners aim to detect areas of tension, misalignment, or reduced motion and help facilitate the release of these restrictions.

The therapy is deeply relaxing, and clients often enter a meditative or sleep-like state during treatment.

Key Principles of CST:

  • The body has an inherent ability to heal itself.

  • The craniosacral system influences the function of the brain and spinal cord.

  • Subtle manipulations can help release restrictions in the body’s connective tissue network (fascia).

  • Enhancing the craniosacral rhythm can improve overall physiological function.

Key Benefits of CranioSacral Therapy

    • Chronic neck and back pain

    • Migraines and tension headaches

    • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders

    • Muscle tensions from stress and trauma

    • Reduces stress and supports parasympathetic nervous system activation (rest-and-digest)

    • Eases symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress

    • Enhances sleep quality

    • Increases range of motion and flexibility

    • May benefit recovery from injuries and surgeries by reducing fascial restrictions

    • Promotes relaxation and mental clarity

    • Enhances immune function through stress reduction

    • Encourages emotional release and processing of trauma

CranioSacral Therapy offers a non-invasive, holistic approach to healing that focuses on the body’s natural rhythms and self-correcting mechanisms.

Its gentle nature makes it appealing to a wide range of individuals, particularly those seeking relief from chronic conditions, stress, and trauma-related symptoms.

Pricing: $120 for a one hour session and includes use of the Biomat during the session.

Safety Considerations

CST is generally considered safe for most people, including children and pregnant women

However, it may be contraindicated in certain medical conditions such as recent skull fractures, intracranial bleeding, or acute aneurysms.
